Thirsty

With this heat wave on I’ve been drinking a lot more water, so too, I believe, are the birds who visit the puddle. Have you ever considered how difficult drinking would be with a beak instead of lips? Here is what I’ve learned about how birds manage to drink. “Different birds each have their own method for drinking water, depending on the type of bird and how much water they need. Birds like doves and pigeons, put their beaks into water and then suck the water up. Many birds also drink by lowering their beaks into water and then tilting their heads back to send the water down!”

This video shows the two methods– first by a Mourning Dove who sips then by a Starling who tilts.

Since we have reached mid-summer country nights are magically lit by fireflies and that is true too in Central Park, right in the heart of New York. I’ll leave you with this nocturnal view of the puddle.

    1. I never knew either Esther. I thought it was interesting. Also, never knew how many fireflies are in Central Park. Someone said it is a sign of a healthy ecosytstem. I should check that.

  3. Your firefly video is enchanting! Really captures the serene feeling of seeing these little flashes in the dark. It’s amazing to me that even in the artificial-light kingdom of NYC, fireflies manage to thrive. We have them in our backyard in West New York too, and it always seems magical to me that they manage in our urban landscape. I do believe what you say that it’s a sign of a healthy ecosystem.
