And the Winner is…

In the last post I queried why Commom Grackles puffed themselves up the way they did (video post 6/26/15) And the reason is…wait for it… we have two winners…#1 aggression and  #2 chirping (also attracting a mate, but here it was the other two). The answer to the Bonus Question- “From what part of the boat does the Boat-tailed Grackle get it’s name” is the keel. In the picture you can see that in flight its long tail hinges so that it looks like a keel on the underside of a boat.

Should we double down on the Grackle? It has some other behaviors that are fun to watch. This time the Grackle is foraging for food, turning over leaf litter to find bugs and other goodies.

COMING ATTRACTIONS: About how many individual birds and species of birds do you think stop by the puddle in one hour? Plus, who ignores their children more robins or humans?

  1. I love learning more about the Grackle and seeing him/her turn over the leaves looking for food, how fun! How many birds and species drop by the puddle in an hour? 10? And who ignores their children more? Can’t wait to hear that one!
